Visual Vocabulary

“Vocabulary Found” (2021)

As photographers we often spend years searching for our “style”! A lot of energy is spent on this misguided quest. We are often told that it will come to us… Yet most creatives are not that patient, especially with themselves. This can lead to frustration and possibly even creative block… We have no voice, so we cannot create!

To better reach this goal, I believe our time should be spent learning the visual vocabulary of our chosen art. How we hope to communicate through our images… and how others have successfully communicated through their images. What works and what doesn’t work. The only way you can expand your visual vocabulary is by looking at lots and lots of images by other creatives!

As your mind reflects on these images and how they’re communicating, the mind stretches it’s boundaries to understand, to comprehend this new language… Through this you will discover your own vocabulary and way of expression.

With your own visual vocabulary, over time, you will find your own “style”, your own personal voice.
